What is a Public Provident Fund (PPF)?
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a popular long-term savings and investment scheme backed by the Government of India. Introduced in 1968, PPF is designed to mobilize small savings by offering reasonable returns combined with high tax benefits under Section 80C and guaranteed capital safety.
Key Features & Tax Benefits of PPF
PPF belongs to the Exempt-Exempt-Exempt (EEE) category. Contributions, interest earned, and maturity proceeds are all completely tax-free.
Backing by the Government of India makes PPF one of the safest fixed-income instruments in the country with zero default risk.
Investments up to ₹1,50,000 in a financial year qualify for tax deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act.
Initial tenure is 15 years, which can be extended indefinitely in blocks of 5 years with or without fresh contributions.
To maximize PPF returns, deposit your annual contribution on or before the 5th of April (or before the 5th of every month if paying monthly). PPF interest is calculated on the minimum balance between the 5th and the last day of each month!
